Developmental Learning: A Case Study in Understanding “Object Permanence”

چکیده
The concepts of muddy environment and muddy tasks set the ground for us to understand the essence of intelligence, both artificial and natural, which further motivates the need of Developmental Learning for machines. In this paper, a biologically inspired computational model is proposed to study one of the fundamental and controversial issues in cognitive science – “Object Permanence.” This model is implemented on a robot, which enables us to examine the robot’s behavior based on perceptual development through realtime experiences. Our experimental result shows consistency with prior researches on human infants, which not only sheds light on the highly controversial issue of object permanence, but also demonstrates how biologically inspired developmental models can potentially develop intelligent machines and verify computational modeling that has been established in cognitive science.

A Case Study of Developmental Robotics in Understanding “Object Permanence”
In this paper, a biologically inspired computational model is proposed and implemented on a robot to study one of the most fundamental and controversial issues in cognitive science – “Object Permanence.” Because of the world-knowledgefree design and the developmental learning ability of this model, we are able to analyze the robot’s behavior based on its perceptual development through different...
متن کاملNew findings on object permanence: A developmental difference between two types of occlusion.
Manual search for totally occluded objects was investigated in 10-, 12- and 14-month-old infants. Infants responded to two types of total hiding in different ways, supporting the inference that object permanence is not a once-and-for-all attainment. Occlusion of an object by movement of a screen over it was solved at an earlier age than occlusion in which an object was carried under the screen....
متن کاملObject permanence and method of disappearance: looking measures further contradict reaching measures.
Piaget proposed that understanding permanency, understanding occlusion events, and forming mental representations were synonymous; however, accumulating evidence indicates that those concepts are not unified in development. Infants reach for endarkened objects at younger ages than for occluded objects, and infants' looking patterns suggest that they expect occluded objects to reappear at younge...
متن کاملIndividual differences in object permanence performance at 8 months: locomotor experience and brain electrical activity.
This work was designed to investigate individual differences in hands-and-knees crawling and frontal brain electrical activity with respect to object permanence performance in 76 eight-month-old infants. Four groups of infants (one prelocomotor and 3 with varying lengths of hands-and-knees crawling experience) were tested on an object permanence scale in a research design similar to that used b...
متن کاملDeveloping Early Senses About the World: “Object Permanence” and Visuoauditory Real-time Learning
What “constraints” are exactly wired into the human developmental program? What “constraints” are minimally necessary for a developmental robot? These are open questions. In this paper, we propose a mechanism of developing experiencebased priming – predicting the future contexts including sensation and action based on the previous experience – as a powerful “constraint” for developmental robots...
